Creative Development

This is where ideas start coming to life. Creative development is the proving ground. Let’s work out what you would like to communicate to your audience or the story you would like to tell.

So why is creative development important? Does every piece of content need a creative development process? Let’s delve into it a little more!

We all know that digital content has become the go to communication tool, that’s old news. Colada has the experience to look at a project idea and turn that seed into something more. We always want the most for our clients whether that be a one off 30 second YouTube pre roll video all the way up to a managed digital campaign. We want you to see absolute value.

Digital content can be used in a number of ways from video content on television, ad smart campaigns to online websites and social media. Let’s not forget that photography is still holding its own too with brochures, online shopping, point of sale and print applications.

We all need content to keep our message fresh and engaging to our audience. Planning a structure to achieve that content is often overlooked and this is where creative development comes in.

Yeh, it’s completely possible to turn up to shoot and come away with great content. But, if we take the time to understand a project’s objectives there’s so much more value that we can deliver in the long run to provide extra value for our clients. Trust us, the juice is always worth the squeeze!

Every great piece of video and photography content starts with an idea, usually a really simple one. The Colada team is constantly working between so many different sectors and industries that our ideas and creative juices are always flowing which really helps our clients when it comes to idea creation and producing content which is engaging to their audience.

Colada’s Creative Development Tips:

Understand the objective

Ultimately and most importantly let’s understand the project objective. Having a clear idea of what you want to achieve from the project is truly the foundation of success.

Simplify those ideas

It’s easy to say “right, we need a video about our business” or “let’s make a video about our event”. Firstly, let’s think about what we want to communicate. Having a video which talks about event access, how easy it is for delegates to enter the event, how big the event space is, which industry professionals will be there etc really muddies the water. Keep it simple, think about the key elements of what you want people to understand and let’s run with that strand. There’s so much we can communicate with video shots alone that subconsciously the viewer will take that information away from. Let’s focus on your key message.

Play with ideas

Don’t be afraid to talk about an idea! Run wild! Sometimes the best ideas come from unrestrained creativity. Try and stray away from the traditional style of brainstorming. In our experience forcing ideas is never the best way to get those creative juices flowing. Create a fun atmosphere where people can put forward ideas and gel together as a team.

Take time away

Following on from playing with ideas, it’s important to take time away, revisit and re-evaluate ideas. Give the team some time to think and move forward. We often find there’s an immediate need for content. It’s not always possible to take time away and action is needed straight away. But, where possible this is a great advantage to have.

Take inspiration

Realistically there are very few ideas that have never been done before. We actually think it’s great when our clients show us other videos or creative campaigns that have been produced. It instantly gives us a starting point on what needs to be achieved for them. For example, if there’s a beautifully lit interview in a nice location we know this is going to be far simpler to achieve than a multiple location project. What we’re trying to say is that we can gauge ambition really quickly.

If you’re thinking about a project currently let’s have a chat about how we can approach that in the best way for you.

What does creative development look like?

Idea creation

We love coming up with interested and engaging ways to best tell and explain a story you would like to communcate to your audience. Lets understand where your assets are going to be used at this point in the project to guide the process forward.

Storyboard

A storyboard is the beginnings of a project visualisation. We often like to digitally draw storyboards and take still photographs to visualise ideas.

Location Sourcing

Location, location, location! What will the light be like at the time of filming? Will it be noisy at certain times when we need to capture clean audio? Does the location best place your brand or product. There’s lots of considerations when choosing a location.

Talent & Contributors

Talent and contributors can really make a project. We have lots of experience when it comes to working with inexperienced talent and sourcing professional talent for productions.

Strategy & Objectives

Lets understand the goals and objectives of your project to plan the path to success.
